Born and raised in the heart of Baltimore, MD, Baba Kauna Mujamal has over 30 years of experience performing and teaching traditional West African Dance.

As an original member of the world-renowned Washington DC based Kankouran West African Dance Company, Baba Kauna deepened his understanding of traditional African Dance and Music. His many years as one of the principal dancers for this company gave him intense daily training with Senegalese Master Dancer Assane Konte.

His natural talent and ferocious passion lead him to create the Baltimore based Sankofa Dance Theatre. As the co-founder of the Sankofa Dance Theatre, and for 16 years as the Artistic Director, Choreographer, Principle Dancer, Costume Designer, Stage Manager and Company Trainer, he introduced tens of thousands of audience members to the power and magic of West African Culture. Likewise, he professionally trained many dozens of company members in the discipline of this high energy and extremely physical art form.  In these roles, Mr. Mujamal nurtured a 10-year benefactor relationship with the Kenedy Center, receiving enormous support for his efforts and for this company.

Master Artists Assane Konte, Marie Basse, Senegal Joe Ballet, Amaniye Payne, Babacar N’Diaye, Babacar N’iang, Aina Delphine Sneed, Maria Broom, (along with many others) have been powerful influences in his artistic career. The late great Chuck Davis was a mentor to both Baba and the whole Sankofa Dance Theatre.

Baba Kauna brings decades of experience performing and training all over the world, including Senegal, The Gambia, Togo, Ghana, Benin, Bali and the Netherlands. He has worked in countless locations up and down the east Coast of the United States, most notably in New York, Washington DC, Baltimore as well as Chicago, Hawaii, California and now in Seattle.

Baba Kauna Mujamal is an unwavering stand for people being the best and most authentic version of themselves, and students feel welcomed and nurtured while learning from him. He is a beautiful dancers, and an excellent teacher!
